Freedom to read differing views is key to maintaining a democratic society. Book banning in public school is unconstitutional. In Board of Education v. Pico, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that a school board’s decision to remove books from the school library based simply on their content violates the First Amendment’s free speech right. The Court says the First Amendment protects the right to receive information and ideas. The justices allow that books that are “pervasively vulgar” or educationally unsuitable can be removed.
Librarians are under attack by extremist groups. We stand with our librarians! The books available in school libraries should be chosen by professionals based on criteria that are as objective as possible, including the books’ educational, pedagogical, literary and artistic values. When books are taken off library shelves because of the personal or political beliefs of any person or group, rather than because of professional educational reasoning, that’s censorship. Extremists are waging a culture war using our schools and libraries and we must put a stop to their oppression and defend our right to READ and think!
Free expression and freedom to read that expression is key to a free society. Communist countries (China, Russia) and authoritarian regimes (Iran, Syria, Saudi Arabia and others) censor access to expression. The United States of America is a democratic, free society where freedom of expression is foundational to our democracy. We must fight against ANY attempts by extremists to lead us down the path of Government Censorship and Thought Police.
It's not just an LT problem. Extremists are using culture wars to hurt our democracy and cripple our educational systems. Use this interactive map to see how many books are being challenged nationwide.
The National Coalition Against Censorship has an excellent guide to advocate for books. Also check out our page on Fighting Book Censorship.
